“Quarterlife” premieres on November 11th on MySpace.

September 13, 2007

The Hollywood Reporter features today a long article about the new Ed Zwick/Marshall Herskovitz web series “Quarterlife” (it’s no longer called “1/4life”).

The show will start on November 11th on myspace.com and consists at the moment of 36 eight-minute long segements. It is a completely rewritten new show based on the basic idea of the failed ABC pilot from 2004.

The official website is quarterlife.com and it even features a trailer for the new show.

Devon Gummersall writes for “Quarterlife”.

Devon Gummersall has reunited with Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz: He’s writing episodes for the new webseries “Quarterlife”. It’ll start airing in the fall in 10-minute webisodes, the show has an order for eight episodes.

“Quarterlife” lives on

July 21, 2007

Another update on “Quarterlife”: Apparently the movie or series based on the original concept of the ABC pilot “1/4life” has been licensed to MySpace which might be broadcasting the show (or movie … I’m still not sure what it is) early next year.

“Quarterlife” – The movie?

December 2006

Well, the tv show is dead but apparently Marshall Herskovitz wants to use the basic idea in a new movie. According to “Production Weekly“, Herskovitz plans a low budget feature that centers around “a women’s magazine editor and writer who drives her friends crazy when they discover that she keeps a rather insightful blog about them on a website called “quarterlife”.”

The production will start in January and might even be released on the internet in serialized form. No casting information so far.

The cast has moved on

March 2006

More indications that “1/4life” won’t be considered for the 2006/07 season:
Rachel Blanchard has been cast in the new ABC comedy pilot “Our Thirties”.
Jacob Pitts will play “Ryan” in CBS’s untitled Carol Mendelsohn pilot.
And Shiri Appleby has signed on to a new movie titled THE KILLING FLOOR.

Zwick & Herskovitz are directing/producing the movies “The Blood Diamond” (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) and “Nice Guy”.

So it really looks like “1/4life” is dead.

New rumors about 1/4life

February 2006

Community-driven website TV.com reports that “1/4life” is back up again for consideration for the 2006/07 season on ABC. Unfortunately, the TV.com article mentions no source for this information and I don’t have any confirmation from other industry sources. I’d say it’s very unlikely that ABC would revisit this project after it’s been in the pipeline for more than 17 months now — but who knows, everything is possible in this business. Just don’t get your hopes up.

I recommend sites like thefutoncritic for reliable informations. If there’s something new to report, I’ll post it here. You may also check out our 1/4life forum topic at MSCL.com.

1/4life not picked up!

June 1st, 2005

Unfortunately, ABC didn’t pickup the show. The pilot episode was shot in late 2004 (around November), but the Powers That Be at ABC decided to not order the show for their fall 2005 schedule. There’s a slim chance that another network might pickup the project but since Zwick and Herskovitz are already involved in new movie projects (”The Blood Diamond” starring Leonardo diCaprio) it’s very unlikely that we’ll ever hear again from this project. Too bad. Well, maybe they’ll be back with a new project for the fall 2006 TV season. Hopefully the unaired pilot episode will be someday available somewhere.

ABC / The Bedford Falls Company official press release

EDWARD ZWICK AND MARSHALL HERSKOVITZ RETURN TO ABC WITH A DRAMA THAT EXPLORES GEN “WHY?”

Network Makes a Pilot Commitment to “1/4life,” an Ensemble One-Hour to Be Produced Under The Bedford Falls Company and Touchstone Television Banners

Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated producers Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz return to television, as ABC makes a pilot commitment to “1/4life,” a drama to be produced by The Bedford Falls Company in association with Touchstone Television, it was announced today by Steve McPherson, president, ABC Primetime Entertainment. The creators of “Once & Again,” “thirtysomething” and “My So Called Life,” who have defined the modern drama, now turn their unique perspective to the lives of a group of Chicago friends and roommates in their 20s – balanced between the carefree and heightened emotions of youth and the mantle of responsibility and adulthood.

“We spent the last two years making films, while the world of television has been in the process of enormous change,” says Zwick, “and we find now that we can tell stories in a different way.” Herskovitz adds, “Of course people will call this ‘twentysomething,’ but we don’t care – we are fascinated by the different passages in people’s lives — but what’s exciting here is that the way we all experience being in our twenties influences how the story must be told.”

“I said early on that ABC would no longer be constrained to an arbitrary development cycle. Ed and Marshall made it easy to keep our word. They pitched us an incredibly insightful vision for this show and then delivered an even more remarkable script,” said McPherson. “This is a great piece of business for us…not only is the script quintessential Herskovitz and Zwick, filled with all the emotion and honesty you’ve come to expect from them, but the premise is absolutely relatable and accessible. We couldn’t be more excited.”

“Ed and Marshall have a legacy of producing groundbreaking television,” said Mark Pedowitz, president, Touchstone Television. “From adolescents to thirtysomethings, families to couples, they capture the very soul of their subjects. We are excited to partner with them as they delve into the psyche of life in your twenties.”

Zwick and Herskovitz first collaborated on the Emmy Award-winning television movie, “Special Bulletin.” They founded The Bedford Falls Company in 1985 – so named for the town in “It’s A Wonderful Life” – as home for their film and television projects. Two years later they created and executive-produced the acclaimed series “thirtysomething,” for which they received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, a Writers Guild Award, two Directors Guild Awards and the Humanitas Prize. Their success followed with ABC dramas “My So-Called Life,” “Relativity” and the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series, “Once and Again.” In feature films, Zwick and Herskovitz recently produced the acclaimed feature “The Last Samurai,” “Traffic” – winner of two Golden Globe and four Academy Awards – and “I Am Sam.”
